NEW TO THE MUSEUM
BILL JOSLER’S 3J When you come to the museum in 2018,
you’ll see a lot that is new this year. New cars are on the floor, new photos
are on the walls and there’s a new trophy case compartment that’s newly dedicated
to supermodifieds. Members get discounts on books and museum wearables.
Bill Josler’s (pictured) 3J
flathead-powered ’32 Ford coupe arrived on May 11. The car is virtually
identical to the way it was raced at Vermont’s Thunder Road Speedway in the
early 60s. It’s the last flathead-powered car to win a feature at the track.
Paul Martell was the winning driver and Hard Luck Haniford owned the 3J at the
time.
Wheels are offset as is the body.
The engine is an 8BA. It’s stroked with a Mercury crank and runs on two
Stromberg 97 carburetors. The ’37 Ford three-speed transmission connects to a
stock Ford rear end. Without a quick change, the car was run in second gear.
Built by Andy Cote, in addition to
Martell the car was driven by Hard Luck Haniford, Bill Phelps, Dale Hatch, Greg
Emery, Rob Chaffee, and Leon Adams.
The 3J is a beautiful restoration.
