An auto racing giant passes on
GIANT PASSES ON
Shany Lorenzet, for decades the track photographer at
Stafford, Waterford and Riverside Park, has died at age 97. He lived on his own
right up to the end, on his terms, in his own home until the final two weeks of
his life which were spent in hospice. The photographs Shany made recorded New
England racing history from the1940s to the 1970s. In many cases, his photos
are the only images of significant races and the drivers who competed in them. He
was a professional and looked the part as he stood in the infield alone with
his camera dressed in white with an Illustrated Speedway News jacket. He
wet-processed 4X5 negatives, then wet process printed and sold the photos to
fans and drivers. Many of his photos as well as his 4X5 camera are on display
at the North East Motor Sports Museum.
