LEGENDARY DRAGSTER ON DISPLAY
NEWEST IS OLD
The newest race car to go on display at the North East Motor Sports Museum is more than 60-years old. Originally built and driven by legendary Sy Sidebothm, the car had been stored for decades before restoration by Hoby Cole. Its then owner offered a trade to Cole before either knew of the car’s incredible history which included being the star of an Oilzum ad which bragged about its speed.
The frame, front end, front tires and wheels, blower, exhaust and other pieces are original. Although it’s not run since the restoration’s completion, it is capable and Cole hopes to make passes in it in 2021.
It’s parked beside the much earlier Bannister Brother’s dragster whose wheelbase is nearly identical. It was only later that drag racers learned the value of crazy-long wheelbases. Back |
